The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) into a financially sustainable, efficient and customer-centred electricity distribution company.
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Energy, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, at the 28th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of ECG, the Deputy Minster, Richard Gyan -Mensah said the government recognises the critical role of the utility company in Ghana’s electricity value chain.
Mr Gyan-Mensah stressed that a financially strong ECG is essential to ensuring reliable power supply, supporting businesses and industries, and sustaining the wider energy sector.
Addressing stakeholders at the AGM, the Deputy Minister who is also the Member of Parliament for Gomoa West highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at improving ECG’s operations, including enhanced revenue collection, stronger financial discipline, improved governance, the implementation of the Cash Waterfall Mechanism and the establishment of a single revenue account to promote transparency and reduce financial leakages.
The reforms, according to the government, are beginning to yield positive results, although further work remains necessary to strengthen the company’s performance and sustainability.
The government also emphasised the need for customer service transformation alongside infrastructure development and financial reforms, noting that consumers deserve reliable electricity supply, responsive services and a utility that operates with professionalism, accountability and integrity.
The vision, he said, is to build an ECG that is financially robust, operationally efficient, customer-focused and capable of becoming one of Africa’s leading electricity distribution companies.
