Vice President Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has called for the development of a tax system that generates the revenue needed for Ghana’s development while remaining fair, efficient and supportive of businesses and individuals.

She made the call at the 14th Conference of the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana (CITG), where she joined tax professionals, policymakers, business leaders and international participants to deliberate on the theme: “Tax Reforms in Practice: Implications for Businesses and Tax Administration.”

Professor Opoku-Agyemang said government had already undertaken important measures to ease the tax burden and simplify the tax system, but stressed that tax legislation alone could not deliver the desired transformation.

According to her, government must also make tax compliance easier through stronger administration, greater use of technology and data, simpler processes and improved taxpayer education.

She emphasised that public trust was equally critical to building an effective tax system, noting that taxpayers were more likely to meet their obligations when they understood the system, considered it fair and could engage with tax authorities without unnecessary difficulties.

The Vice President also highlighted the important role of tax professionals in strengthening public confidence in the tax system.

She said tax professionals help businesses and individuals understand their tax obligations, support compliance and provide valuable professional expertise to inform the development of tax policies.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang further noted that the changing nature of business and international taxation required Ghana to remain technically prepared and deepen collaboration with other African countries.

She stressed the need for Ghana and other African countries to work together to ensure that their interests were effectively represented in global tax discussions.

The Vice President congratulated the Chartered Institute of Taxation, Ghana, on the successful organisation of the conference and commended its contribution to strengthening tax administration and professional practice in the country.
