Three people have been confirmed dead and nine others injured after armed men launched a fresh attack on Odomi, a community in the Nkwanta South Municipality of the Oti Region, heightening tensions in the area.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, June 18, when unidentified gunmen reportedly invaded the community amid the ongoing conflict in the municipality, leaving residents in panic as they fled for safety.
The injured victims were rushed to the Nkwanta St. Joseph Catholic Hospital for emergency treatment.
Hospital sources confirmed that one of the injured later died while receiving care, while two others were brought in already deceased after reportedly being attacked on their farms.
The identities of the attackers remain unknown, and the motive behind the assault has not yet been established.
Security agencies, supported by the military, have since intensified patrols in and around affected communities in efforts to restore calm and prevent further violence.
The latest attack comes just days after the Oti Regional House of Chiefs announced plans to establish a seven-member committee to engage stakeholders and recommend long-term solutions to the protracted conflict in Nkwanta South.
The committee is yet to be inaugurated but is expected to begin consultations aimed at restoring peace and stability in the area.
