The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has honoured its founder and former President, Jerry John Rawlings, by renaming its national headquarters after him and unveiling a commemorative bust in recognition of his enduring contribution to Ghana’s political development.
The ceremony, held on Monday, June 22, coincided with what would have been the late statesman’s 79th birthday and formed part of activities aimed at celebrating his legacy and impact on the nation’s democratic journey.
Organised under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy,” the event brought together party executives, government officials, supporters, and distinguished guests to reflect on Rawlings’ role in shaping Ghana’s political landscape and the establishment of the Fourth Republic.
As part of the commemoration, the NDC officially dedicated its national headquarters to the memory of its founder, describing the move as a lasting tribute to the ideals, values, and vision that guided his public service and political leadership.
A memorial bust of Rawlings was also unveiled at the party headquarters to serve as a symbol of his influence on both the party and the nation.
Addressing the gathering, party leaders paid glowing tribute to the former President, highlighting his contributions to democratic governance, accountability, and national development.
They noted that the principles he championed continue to shape the NDC’s philosophy and political direction.
President John Dramani Mahama was expected to join the event and deliver a tribute in honour of Rawlings, alongside other senior party figures who reflected on his legacy and contributions to Ghana’s democratic evolution.
Rawlings, who passed away in November 2020, remains one of Ghana’s most influential political figures.
He first led the country as a military ruler before overseeing the transition to constitutional rule and later serving as Ghana’s first President under the Fourth Republic from 1993 to 2001.
