A political and social advocacy group, the Ashanti Democrats, has petitioned the Ashanti Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to conduct an independent investigation into allegations of illegal mining activities in the Ahafo Ano South East District.
In a petition dated July 15, 2026, the group called on the CID to establish the facts surrounding recent claims of illegal mining in the area, citing concerns over environmental destruction, the credibility of public institutions, and the need to uphold the rule of law.
The group, led by its President, Jerry James Sukah, has requested that the police invite vlogger Amaru Shakur, who published reports on the alleged mining activities, to assist with the investigations.
According to the Ashanti Democrats, Shakur should be given the opportunity to present any evidence, documents, or relevant information in his possession to aid the inquiry.
The petition comes after allegations of illegal mining in the district, with the group noting that the Member of Parliament for the area, Hon. Mohammed Yakubu, and the District Chief Executive, Ibrahim Yamba-Nelson, have both publicly denied any involvement in the activities.
The group believes a thorough investigation by the CID will help clarify the allegations, protect the integrity of the individuals involved, and promote transparency and accountability.
Speaking to the media after submitting the petition, Jerry James Sukah expressed confidence that the CID would handle the matter with the seriousness it requires and take the necessary steps to establish the facts in accordance with Ghana’s laws.
