One person has reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the leg following a confrontation involving a joint Military and Police team believed to be attached to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAiMOS) at Kyebi in the Abuakwa South municipality of the Eastern Region.
The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, but information gathered indicates that a group of youth engaged in mining activities in the area allegedly blocked an access road to prevent the security personnel from entering the site.
The youth are said to have accused the security team of selective enforcement, alleging that the officers bypassed other mining locations before targeting their operations.
According to sources, the miners argued that other individuals involved in similar illegal mining activities in the area had not been affected by the operation, leading them to accuse the security personnel of unfair treatment and favouritism.
The situation has reportedly heightened tensions in parts of Kyebi, particularly within the Zongo community, where some youth have gathered to demand justice over the shooting incident.
The injured individual is currently receiving treatment at the Kibi Government Hospital.
The Ghana Armed Forces, the Ghana Police Service and the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat are yet to issue an official statement on the incident as investigations continue.
