President John Dramani Mahama says the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway will feature multiple interchanges, rest stops, toll facilities and other services designed to make long-distance travel safer and more convenient.
Speaking during the handover of the cleared right-of-way at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region on Monday, September 14, the President outlined some of the facilities planned for the 198.7-kilometre highway.
According to Mahama, the road will have two toll interchanges, one at the Ashanti end and another at the Greater Accra end.
“It will have two toll interchanges, one on the Ashanti end and one on the greater Accra end.”
The expressway will also have eight interchanges to allow motorists to connect to communities along the corridor.
“It will have eight interchanges so that if you are going off to Asamankesi, you go off-ramp, you go under the road, and there’ll be a road taking you to Asamankesi.”
Four rest stops will also be constructed along the route.
“And then there’ll be four rest stops. And so if you are driving and you’re tired, you want to rest, there’ll be four rest stops along the road.”
Mahama said motorists will be able to refuel, eat, shop and rest before continuing their journeys.
The President further disclosed that tow trucks and CCTV cameras will form part of the road’s safety infrastructure.
The project is a flagship of the government’s Big Push infrastructure programme. The 2026 Budget states that the expressway will have eight major interchanges, three major bridges and four full-service areas.
The Ghana Armed Forces has completed the clearing of 175.6 kilometres of the right-of-way, bringing the project to the next stage ahead of construction.
