The government is targeting the creation of at least 20,000 permanent jobs through a nationwide sanitation and circular economy programme, Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Mahama Ayariga has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series at the Jubilee House on Monday, October 5, Mr Ayariga said government was developing a nationwide sanitation strategy that would include engineered landfill sites, waste transfer stations, waste collection vehicles, tricycles and household waste bins.
He said the strategy was being designed to make waste collection more efficient while reducing the cost and inconvenience currently faced by households. Payments for waste collection would ultimately be automated, with government seeking to strengthen existing operators while creating opportunities for new participants.
“We hope to create not less than 20,000 permanent jobs in the waste management and circular economy,” he said.
Mr Ayariga said the initiative would also deliberately create more opportunities for women to participate in the sanitation and waste management industry, while government works towards establishing the infrastructure required for a more sustainable waste management system nationwide.
