The outcome of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference has triggered commentary over a significant shift in the party’s leadership structure, particularly involving National Chairman John Boadu and Second Vice Chairman Henry Nana Boakye(Nana B).
A commentary on the outcome described the development as a case of “when the tables turn,” highlighting the political journey of Nana Boakye and his former association with Mr Kojo Fosu Boadu, also known as Kojo Bamba was Nana B’s bodyguard and leader of the dreaded Delta Force, the vigilante wing of the New Patriotic Party(NPP).
The commentary noted that, following Mr Boadu’s election as First Vice National Chairman, Nana Boakye would now be required to take instructions from him in the discharge of their respective responsibilities within the party.
It further argued that Mr Boadu, by virtue of his position as First Vice Chairman, would preside over key meetings of the party, including the National Delegates Conference, National Council, National Executive Committee and National Steering Committee instead of the National Chairman.
According to the commentary, in the absence of the National Chairman, the party’s First Vice Chairman would assume certain responsibilities in accordance with the NPP’s organisational arrangements.
It also claimed that in the absence of both the party’s presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the National Chairman, the First Vice Chairman would assume the role of party leader and National Chairman.
The development follows the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi, where Mr Boadu was elected First Vice National Chairman after securing 2,888 votes.
Mr John Boadu defeated Boakye Agyarko, who polled 2,048 votes, while Paul Afoko received 490 votes.
Henry Nana Boakye, popularly known as Nana B, was elected Second Vice Chairman at the same conference, forming part of the new national executive leadership expected to steer the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The reshuffle of roles has since generated discussion within political circles, particularly about the new working relationship between the two NPP figures.
