A taxi driver has been fined GH¢100 after he was caught throwing rubbish from his moving vehicle along the Kenkey Factory Road at Bakita in Koforidua, as the New Juaben South Municipal Assembly steps up enforcement of its sanitation by-laws.
The driver, identified as Godfred Nartey, was intercepted by Municipal Environmental Health Officer Emmanuel Tetteh, who witnessed the offence during a routine patrol. He was directed to retrieve the discarded waste but was unable to find it after searching the area.
Assembly officials subsequently escorted him to the Municipal Assembly, where he was sanctioned for violating the municipality’s environmental sanitation regulations.
Authorities offered the driver two penalties: pay a GH¢100 fine or carry out community service by clearing weeds and collecting refuse at the location of the offence. He chose to pay the fine.
Speaking after the incident, Mr. Tetteh urged commuters to keep waste inside their vehicles and dispose of it only at designated bins after completing their journeys.
He also disclosed that sanitation task forces have been deployed across the municipality to clamp down on indiscriminate littering, warning that offenders will either be made to clean up the waste or face the prescribed penalties.
The New Juaben South Municipal Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing sanitation laws, saying the exercise is intended to promote a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
