A group calling itself the Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 has petitioned the Council of Elders of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), demanding the resignation of the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, over concerns surrounding arrangements for the ongoing constituency executive elections.

In a petition dated July 11, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman and members of the Council of Elders at the party’s national headquarters in Accra, the group argued that recent decisions taken by the General Secretary risk undermining party unity and grassroots participation ahead of the 2028 general elections.

The petition, signed by the group’s Convenor, Enoch Ayim, cited directives issued by the Office of the General Secretary ahead of the constituency elections, which reportedly informed delegates that the party would not provide transportation allowances, food, drinks, snacks or water during the exercise.

According to the group, the directive requiring delegates to “arrive, vote and leave” places an unfair burden on thousands of polling station executives and electoral area coordinators, particularly those travelling from rural and deprived communities.

The petitioners argued that expecting delegates to cater for their own transportation and welfare expenses amid prevailing economic challenges could lead to low voter turnout, disenfranchisement and possible tensions during the elections.

The group also questioned what it described as an apparent contradiction between the party’s claim of financial constraints and reports that Mr. Kodua Frimpong had personally supported the payment of nomination fees for some aspirants in various constituencies.

According to the petition, this situation has created perceptions among party members about misplaced priorities and raised concerns about leadership decisions at the national level.

The Grassroots Alliance for Victory 2028 is therefore urging the Council of Elders to invite the General Secretary to explain the rationale behind the withdrawal of welfare support for delegates and address concerns surrounding the party’s financial position.

The group further called on the National Executive Committee to reconsider the decision and provide at least basic welfare support, including water and refreshments, to delegates participating in the elections.

It also appealed to the Council of Elders to advise Mr. Kodua Frimpong to step aside as General Secretary should he fail to restore confidence in his leadership and address the concerns raised.

The petitioners maintained that their actions are motivated by a desire to protect the unity, image and electoral prospects of the NPP ahead of the 2028 polls.
