President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his determination to make his second term in office one of lasting impact, saying he intends to set governance and economic standards so high that future governments will be unable to undo them.
Addressing participants at the 77th Annual New Year School at the University of Ghana, Legon, the President said Ghana’s development has often suffered from frequent policy reversals whenever there is a change in government.
He stressed that his administration is focused on deep, enduring reforms that will strengthen state institutions, accelerate national development and secure long-term stability.
“With every regime change, economic development programmes are discarded and replaced with entirely new ones. Our progress as a nation must transcend political seasons,” President Mahama said.
“And this is why I’ve decided to make this second mandate so graciously granted to me by Ghanaians count. I’ve pledged to raise our economy and governance to a level that no succeeding government can reverse.”
He also placed Ghana’s democratic journey within a broader regional context, noting growing concerns about democratic decline in parts of Africa. According to him, Ghana must stand as proof that democratic governance can deliver real benefits to citizens.
“In a region where democracy is backsliding, we must demonstrate that democracy works and that our people can have faith in their leaders to uphold their interests and create opportunities for national prosperity,” he stated.
President Mahama further assured Ghanaians that his government will maintain fiscal discipline and prudent economic management throughout his tenure, including during the 2028 election year.
“I can assure Ghanaians also that we will not relax the current fiscal discipline and efficient management of the economy even in the election year of 2028,” he added.
