Deputy Minister for Health Dr Grace Ayensu Danquah has visited the Center of Awareness (COA) Research and Manufacturing Company in the Central Region to assess its operations and compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs).
During the visit, Dr Danquah engaged management and staff of the company and inspected its facilities to gain insight into its research and manufacturing activities.
She said the visit had reinforced her view that Ghana’s traditional medicine sector had significant potential to complement conventional healthcare, provided products were scientifically validated, safe, effective and properly regulated.
Dr Danquah said evidence-based traditional medicine could play a role in efforts to improve healthcare delivery, particularly as the government advances its Free Primary Healthcare agenda.
She identified the prevention and management of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes as areas where scientifically validated traditional medicine could potentially complement existing healthcare interventions.
The Deputy Minister stressed the need for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in research, quality assurance, manufacturing and regulation to ensure that traditional medicine products meet the required safety and quality standards.
She said the government would continue to support efforts to strengthen the traditional medicine sector and ensure that its contribution to healthcare delivery was guided by scientific evidence and effective regulation.
Dr Danquah said integrating safe and properly regulated traditional medicine into the broader healthcare system could contribute to improved health outcomes for Ghanaians.
