In a major move to curb illegal mining in Ghana, the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has contributed GH₵5 million and five Toyota Hilux pickups to the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS).
The donation, presented at GoldBod’s Accra headquarters on Monday, September 15, 2025, underscores the board’s commitment to sustainable and responsible mining practices while supporting government efforts against the destructive galamsey operations.
Speaking at the event, GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi Esq. stressed the need for gold to be mined responsibly.
“Our collective survival as a people depends on the success of the fight against illegal mining and so we cannot afford to fail,” he said, highlighting the importance of environmental protection and traceable gold supply chains.
Beyond financial support and vehicles, GoldBod plans to back initiatives including formalizing small-scale mining, reclaiming 1,000 hectares of degraded forest, and enhancing traceability in the gold sector.
Receiving the donation, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah praised the board’s contribution as a crucial boost in tackling galamsey.
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to restoring devastated forests, cleaning polluted water bodies, and prosecuting offenders swiftly, while coordinating with other ministries to regulate mining equipment.
