The Government of Ghana has announced the passing of former First Lady and founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings.
This was confirmed in a statement from the Presidency and signed by Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
Government, according to the statement expressed deep regret and extended its condolences to the Rawlings family.
Nana Konadu, wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, reportedly died at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Born on November 17, 1948, she was 76. She served as Ghana’s First Lady from 1981 to 2001 and was widely celebrated for her advocacy for women’s empowerment through the 31st December Women’s Movement, which she founded in 1982.
Nana Konadu was also a political figure in her own right, having served as the First Vice Chairperson of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) before breaking away to form the National Democratic Party (NDP) in 2012.
She is survived by four children — Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina, and Kimathi Rawlings.
