‘Democracy will continue to attack you until you apologise’ – Franklin Cudjoe slams NPP’s protest

IMANI Africa Founding President Franklin Cudjoe has launched a scathing critique of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) planned August 6 demonstration, describing the opposition party’s decision to protest under the theme “Democracy Under Attack” as ironic given its record in government.

The NPP is expected to stage the nationwide protest on Wednesday, August 6, saying it seeks to defend democracy and draw attention to what it believes are threats to constitutional governance and civil liberties.

The planned demonstration, however, coincides with the first anniversary of the helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight government officials and security personnel while on official duty—a tragedy that plunged the nation into mourning.

Weighing in on the planned protest, Franklin Cudjoe accused the NPP of attempting to portray itself as a defender of democracy despite what he described as serious failings during its tenure in office.

Opening his criticism with sarcasm, Mr. Cudjoe wrote, “What is the theme of the NPP’s planned protest again? ‘Democracy under attack’? I laugh enter Akple chop bars in SALL…”

He argued that the party remained silent while, in his view, policies pursued under its administration left tens of thousands of people stateless and inflicted severe economic hardship on ordinary Ghanaians.

According to him, the NPP “committed the most egregious sin against democracy” and has yet to apologise to the Ghanaian people.

“You committed the most egregious sin against democracy, and you haven’t even apologized! Democracy will continue to attack you until apologise!” he stated.

Mr. Cudjoe also revisited the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP), accusing the former government of using its parliamentary majority to impose painful financial losses on citizens.

He claimed the programme deprived many pensioners, students, the elderly and other vulnerable Ghanaians of their savings and future security, describing it as the exploitation of representative democracy.

Beyond his criticism of the protest itself, the IMANI President lamented that he had to postpone a scheduled national television and radio discussion on plastic waste because media houses would instead focus on the NPP’s demonstration.

He further suggested that the protest would leave behind litter on the streets.
