The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has ordered the immediate closure of Dukes Fuel Station at Kasoa Second Bus Stop over poor sanitation conditions that contributed to flooding along the highway.
The closure forms part of ongoing efforts by authorities to improve environmental sanitation and reduce flood risks within the municipality.
According to the EPA Kasoa Area Head, Mr. Abbas Dawood, an inspection of the facility revealed that choked drains at the frontage of the fuel station were obstructing the free flow of water, causing flooding on the main road during rainfall.
He explained that the situation posed serious risks to motorists and pedestrians, as floodwaters from the blocked drains overflowed onto the highway.
Mr. Dawood noted that the fuel station continued to operate despite the sanitation challenges, prompting intervention from the Municipal Assembly following the inspection.
He said the facility will remain closed until the drains are properly desilted and all identified sanitation concerns are addressed.
The EPA and the Assembly have reaffirmed their commitment to enforcing environmental regulations and ensuring that businesses maintain acceptable sanitation standards to protect public safety and minimise flooding risks
