President John Dramani Mahama has announced a comprehensive compensation and support package for the families of the eight people who died in the August 6, 2025 military helicopter crash, saying the nation has a duty to honour their sacrifice and ensure their loved ones are cared for.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, July 30, the President disclosed that he, together with Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin and other senior government officials, met with the bereaved families to formally hand over the package.
“No amount of resources can replace the warmth, leadership, and love of those we lost, but it is our solemn duty as a nation to ensure their sacrifices are honoured and their loved ones are never abandoned,” President Mahama wrote.
According to him, the support package includes statutory compensation totalling GH¢13,872,962.40 for civilian dependants in accordance with the Workmen’s Compensation Act, as well as full compensation for the deceased Ghana Air Force personnel under the applicable military regulations.
The President also announced the establishment of 19 educational accounts worth GH¢1 million each at Stanbic Bank to support the education of the victims’ children.
The package comprises 13 professionally managed trust funds for minor children and six fixed deposits for adult children.
In addition, each dependant will receive Premier Nationwide Health Insurance valued at GH¢3 million annually, providing access to nearly 1,000 healthcare facilities across the country.
President Mahama said the families were also presented with personalised legacy boxes containing investment certificates, commemorative medallions and personal letters addressed to each child.
“This effort was made possible by a GHS 8.4 million state contribution and over GHS 10 million raised through the generosity of corporate Ghana and individual citizens. I thank every Ghanaian who contributed,” he stated.
The President further assured the families of the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, Samuel Aboagye, Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah that the nation would continue to stand by them.
On August 6, 2025, a Ghana Air Force helicopter transporting senior government officials and military personnel crashed while on an official assignment, killing all eight people on board.
The victims included government ministers, senior public officials and members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The tragedy sparked nationwide mourning, with the government declaring a period of national grief and promising to support the bereaved families while investigations into the cause of the crash were conducted.
