The Secretary- General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, says the outcome of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Delegates Conference will not change what he describes as the party’s lack of a clear plan for national development.
According to him, Ghanaians should not be overly concerned about changes in the NPP’s leadership, arguing that the party’s focus when in government was primarily to enrich its members.
Speaking on Ahotor FM on Saturday, October 3, Mr Koomson urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to remain focused on delivering its mandate while improving its engagement with the grassroots.
“I don’t care if Akufo-Addo is made the national chairman.
The NDC must just be focused and sit up on the way they relate with their grassroots,” he said.
Mr Koomson also commended President John Dramani Mahama for his leadership and what he described as the international recognition the President has gained.
He cited President Mahama’s participation and address at the 81st United Nations General Assembly as an indication of his growing international profile.
The GFL Secretary General said President Mahama was gradually addressing what he described as the difficult economic situation inherited from the previous NPP administration.
He further expressed strong support for the President’s leadership, saying he would welcome a situation in which Mr Mahama could remain in office beyond the constitutionally prescribed limits.
“If President Mahama will be made the permanent president, I will like because he is doing well and that’s exactly the person we need as President,” he said.
Mr Koomson, however, called on Ghanaians to support the government’s efforts to improve living conditions during the remainder of President Mahama’s constitutional term.
“Let’s all help him with his plans he has for the country in his last two years remaining,” he said.
He also urged the NDC leadership to maintain strong links with its grassroots supporters, stressing that effective communication and regular engagement would be important as the government continues to implement its development agenda.
