An independent parliamentary candidate hopeful in the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency of the Greater Accra Region, Abraham Aidoo has raised concerns over the state of healthcare and access to potable water in the constituency, citing severe challenges at the Katamanso Health Centre.
According to the candidate, the health facility currently lacks a reliable water supply and is forced to spend about GH¢800 every week to purchase water to enable it to operate.
He said the facility has a borehole, but the water is reportedly salty and cannot be used without treatment.
“This is the Katamanso Health Centre; there is no water. They buy GH¢800 worth of water every week before they can work,” he said in an interview after touring the facility.
He questioned why the government had been unable to treat the borehole water for use by the facility, arguing that the situation was unacceptable for a health centre serving residents in the area.
The candidate also expressed concern about the size and capacity of the facility, saying its relatively small structure and limited infrastructure could not adequately accommodate the healthcare needs of the growing population.
He called on the government to intervene urgently by providing a reliable water supply, expanding the health centre and equipping it with the necessary medical resources.
“I am calling on government to come and not only provide water, but expand and improve the facility to help save lives,” he said.
The independent candidate hopeful said he had been visiting communities across Kpone-Katamanso to better understand the challenges facing residents.
He claimed that more than 90% of people in the constituency lack access to water, describing potable water as a basic necessity that should not be denied residents.
He further argued that residents should not have to travel outside the constituency to access quality healthcare when health facilities exist within their communities.
The candidate also criticised what he described as the neglect of Kpone-Katamanso despite the constituency’s contribution to government revenue and its longstanding political significance.
He said the condition of the Katamanso Health Centre was particularly troubling at a time when healthcare systems in other countries were advancing.
He urged the government to treat the water and healthcare challenges in the constituency as an urgent priority and ensure that the facility is expanded and properly equipped to serve residents.
The candidate said addressing the challenges would help improve access to healthcare and reduce the need for residents to seek treatment outside the constituency.
