The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has strongly condemned an alleged assault on Peace FM’s Eastern Regional Correspondent, Michael Akrofi, by a police officer at the Tafo–Kukurantumi Formed Police Unit during a farmers’ demonstration.
The journalist was reportedly covering a protest against the destruction of crops by Fulani herdsmen when he was allegedly attacked from behind, strangled on three occasions, and threatened by the officer.
Mr. Akrofi suffered pains in his neck, back, and waist and sought medical attention. The incident has been reported to the Eastern Regional Police Command, but the journalist has yet to receive a response.
The GJA described the attack as “barbaric and unprofessional” and a direct violation of press freedom, stressing that journalists must be able to cover events without fear of intimidation or violence.
The association has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the regional command to investigate promptly and hold the officer accountable.
Emphasizing the need for collaboration between journalists and security personnel, the GJA urged mutual respect and adherence to professional standards to safeguard democratic freedoms.
The association pledged to monitor the case closely and ensure justice for the affected journalist.
