Manchester United have parted ways with Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim after 14 months at the helm. His final game was a 1-1 draw against Leeds United, leaving the club sixth in the Premier League after 20 matches.
Darren Fletcher, the club’s Under-18s coach, will take over as interim manager, starting with Wednesday’s away fixture at Burnley, while a permanent replacement is expected in the summer.
United’s leadership team, including chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox, made the decision following a breakdown in relations behind the scenes.
Amorim’s contract, signed in November 2024, runs until 2027 and must be paid in full.
The club said the decision was made “reluctantly” to “give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.” Amorim had faced criticism for sticking to his preferred 3-4-3 formation despite challenges in signing suitable players.
During his tenure, the former Sporting CP coach struggled to embed his philosophy fully, with the team suffering inconsistent results, including dropped points against lower-ranked sides.
