Salam Mustapha: NPP to protest on Sept 23 over ‘police intimidation’

The National Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has demanded accountability from the Ghana Police Service following violent clashes with students of Tamale Technical University (TaTU) on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

In a strongly worded statement signed by National Youth Organizer, Salam Mustapha, the group described the police response as “sordid and despicable,” insisting that no democracy should tolerate such treatment of unarmed students.

Videos circulating on social media showed officers using hot water cannons and firing warning shots to disperse protesting students, who had marched against alleged financial mismanagement, poor welfare, and attempts to increase fees without due process.

The protest, which began peacefully with placards and chants such as “Fix TaTU Now” and “Director of Finance Must Go,” quickly escalated into confrontations that left several students injured.

The NPP Youth Wing said the brutality undermines confidence in the police and erodes the rights of young people. “As a youth wing, we believe that a well-trained and equipped police force in riot control should have acted professionally in calming down the students without the brutalization,” the statement noted.

While urging calm on campus, the group called on the Inspector-General of Police to sanction the Northern Regional Police Command and bring offending officers to book. They stressed that protecting Ghana’s youth is key to safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

Student leaders have also raised demands for an independent forensic audit into the university’s Internally Generated Funds (IGF), hostel revenues, and fee utilisation over the last five years.

GRASAG President, Abdul Ganiwu Inusah, called for firms like KPMG to conduct the audit, warning that fee hikes must be suspended until transparency is ensured.

The SRC further accused management of deliberately withholding student funds and undermining student leadership, while also demanding the reopening of satellite campuses and the provision of better facilities such as a modern ICT lab.

For now, both sides await intervention from the Ministry of Education, as tension continues to hang over the TaTU campus.
