The Council of State is set to engage representatives of striking pre-tertiary teacher unions on Friday, October 9, 2026, as efforts intensify to resolve the ongoing nationwide strike.
The meeting, scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Council’s Secretariat in Accra, is expected to provide an opportunity for the unions to present their concerns directly to members of the Council.
According to an invitation signed on behalf of the Chairman of the Council’s Economic and Social Development Committee, HRM Drolor Rosso Adamtey I, discussions will centre on issues surrounding teacher promotions, deprived-area allowances and the Collective Bargaining Agreement being negotiated with the Ministry of Education.
The industrial action involves the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and the Pre-Tertiary Teachers Association of Ghana (PRETAG).
The unions have cited delays in processing promotion-related payments, the non-implementation of the deprived-area allowance and the delay in concluding a new collective agreement among the issues behind the strike.
They have maintained that the action will continue while the outstanding matters remain unresolved.
Meanwhile, the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department has reported progress in processing the promotion records of 52,000 teachers.
Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei said the department had processed the records and received the relevant input forms from the Ghana Education Service as of 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 8.
The records are to undergo the necessary verification to support salary adjustments and the payment of arrears.
The Council of State’s planned engagement comes amid ongoing efforts by government institutions and teacher unions to reach an agreement and bring the industrial action to an end.
