Active membership coverage under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has increased from 56.3% in 2024 to 70% as of August 2026, reflecting a significant expansion in access to health insurance across Ghana.
NHIS claims paid to healthcare providers have also reached GH¢2.1 billion to date, providing financial support for the delivery of healthcare services to insured members.
According to the Ministry of Health, the development comes alongside a substantial increase in revenue generated through the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL).
NHIL revenue rose from GH¢6.52 billion in 2024 to GH¢9.76 billion in 2025, representing a significant increase in resources available to support the financing of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The growth in active membership coverage, claims payments and NHIL revenue points to efforts to strengthen the sustainability of the NHIS while expanding access to healthcare for Ghanaians.
The figures are expected to further support ongoing efforts to improve healthcare financing and ensure that more Ghanaians can access essential health services under the national insurance system.
