A 27-year-old man, Awudu Baba, has been sentenced to three years in prison by the Ofaakor Circuit Court for stealing mobile phones.
Baba was arrested by personnel of the Central East Regional Police Command’s Regional Operations Unit during a random stop-and-search exercise on the Kasoa-Bawjiase road on September 19, 2026.
According to the Central East Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Nchor, police found five smartphones and five SIM cards in the suspect’s possession.
The phones included an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge and Samsung A12.
DCOP Nchor said the suspect attempted to destroy evidence when he realised he was being arrested by removing and swallowing the SIM cards from the phones.
“The Central East Regional Police Command on the 19th of September 2026 at about 12 a.m. during a random stop and search of vehicles on the Kasoa-Bawjiase Road intercepted suspect Abu Dubaba aged 27 in whose possession five different brands of smartphones, that is iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung A12 and five SIM cards were found.”
He added, “The suspect sensing arrest swallowed the SIM cards of all the phones which he had already taken out of the phones believed to be stolen. Further investigations revealed that he actually stole the phones from Eutubo-Bodjasi in the central region.”
The suspect was subsequently convicted by the Ofaakor Circuit Court and sentenced to three years in prison.
Police are urging anyone who may have lost a mobile phone in the area to report to the Central East Regional Police Command for identification and collection.
The arrest followed a random stop-and-search operation conducted by the Regional Operations Unit along the Kasoa-Bawjiase road.
Police investigations subsequently linked the phones found in Baba’s possession to thefts at Awutu Bawjiase in the Central Region.
