The government has authorised the implementation of a contra flow arrangement for the Aayalolo Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system as part of measures to ease congestion on major routes in Accra.
The arrangement, authorised by the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, takes effect on September 28, 2026, with designated sections of the Kasoa, Adenta and Amasaman corridors earmarked for the initiative.
Under the arrangement, authorised Aayalolo BRT buses will be permitted to travel against the normal flow of general traffic during peak hours to bypass congestion and improve the reliability of public transport services.
The contra flow will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. in the morning and from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the evening.
According to the Minister, the measure is intended to reduce journey times for commuters, improve the efficiency of the BRT system and ease pressure on the roads caused by private vehicles.
The Minister has called on motorists to cooperate with the arrangement and observe traffic directives in the affected areas.
The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has also been urged to ensure strict enforcement of the traffic measures to support the smooth operation of the contra flow system.
