Nkroful in the Western Region has hosted a grand durbar to commemorate the 117th birthday of Ghana’s first President and founder of modern Ghana, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.
The event, dubbed the “Journey to Nkroful,” brought together people who identify with Dr Nkrumah’s vision and legacy, as well as traditional authorities, dignitaries, partners, volunteers and residents of the Western Region.
The celebration provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on the legacy of Dr Nkrumah and the continued relevance of his vision for Ghana and the wider African continent.
The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi -Buah speaking at durbar said 117 years after his birth, Dr Nkrumah continued to serve as a unifying figure whose ideas and vision remained relevant to Ghana’s development and Africa’s progress.
Organisers expressed gratitude to the traditional authorities, guest speakers, dignitaries, partners and volunteers who contributed to the success of this year’s celebration.
He also commended the people of the Western Region for opening their communities to participants and helping to host the national commemorative activities.
He said the symbolism of the celebration was captured in the belief that “the torch is still burning” and that the responsibility of carrying forward Dr Nkrumah’s vision rests with the current generation.
The celebration at Nkroful formed part of efforts to honour the memory of one of Ghana and Africa’s most prominent historical figures and to encourage continued reflection on his contribution to the continent’s political and developmental journey
The grand durbar also highlighted the importance of preserving and passing on Dr Nkrumah’s ideals to future generations.
