The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is set to present its position paper on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution today, Thursday, September 17, 2026.
The presentation is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and is expected to outline the party’s position on the constitutional reform proposals currently under consideration.
The NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee undertook a review of the Constitution Review Committee’s recommendations as well as the government’s response and prepared a position paper for consideration by the party’s leadership.
The party’s National Executive Committee was expected to consider and approve the document before its position was formally communicated to the public.
The development comes amid a broader national debate over proposed amendments to the 1992 Constitution.
The government has already stated its position on several of the proposed reforms, including changes concerning the size of government, presidential and parliamentary elections, the appointment and tenure of public officials, the Judiciary, local government and the electoral system.
Among the government’s proposals are a maximum of 60 ministers, a maximum of 300 Members of Parliament, changes to the timing of national elections and the election of District Chief Executives.
The government has also supported some reforms recommended by the Constitution Review Committee, including the abolition of the death penalty and the introduction of a citizen-initiative mechanism for constitutional amendments.
The NPP’s position paper is therefore expected to provide further clarity on which of the proposed constitutional changes the party supports, opposes or believes require modification.
The presentation will form part of the party’s ongoing engagement with the proposed constitutional reforms ahead of the next stages of the national review process.
