The Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital, is set to receive a major boost to its diagnostic capacity following a $10 million commitment from KGL Group towards the construction of a new Diagnostic and Imaging Centre.
The project is being undertaken in partnership with the KGL Foundation and the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) under the government’s flagship Mahama Cares initiative.
Unlike an earlier appeal by the GMTF to Corporate Ghana for modern diagnostic equipment, the KGL Group has committed to financing an entirely new, purpose-built facility to house a comprehensive range of specialist imaging services.
When completed, the centre will be equipped with advanced technologies, including Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computed Tomography (CT) scan, mammography, digital X-ray and fluoroscopy machines.
The facility is expected to significantly strengthen Ridge Hospital’s ability to diagnose and manage complex medical conditions while reducing the need for patients to seek advanced imaging services at private facilities.
The project officially entered its implementation phase following a site inspection at Ridge Hospital led by GMTF Administrator Adjoa Obuobia Darko-Opoku and KGL Group Chief Executive Officer Alex Apau Dadey.
Ridge Hospital, which reportedly attends to about 800 patients daily, was identified through the GMTF’s nationwide needs assessment as having a significant gap in advanced diagnostic services.
The new centre is expected to help reduce long waiting times and referrals while providing faster and more accurate diagnosis for thousands of patients.
Speaking on the broader strategy of the GMTF, Mrs Darko-Opoku said the Fund was shifting its focus beyond paying medical bills to addressing structural gaps within the healthcare system.
“Funding treatment does not help much without the right equipment. Equipment is not useful without trained specialists, and ongoing care needs research,” she said.
The GMTF said its responsibility would extend beyond the procurement and installation of equipment, with systems being put in place for management, servicing and maintenance to ensure the facility remains functional and sustainable.
The initiative is being positioned as a significant private-sector investment in Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure and is expected to contribute to improved access to specialised diagnostic services.
KGL Group has reaffirmed its commitment to continued collaboration with the Ghana Medical Trust Fund in efforts to improve the quality and accessibility of healthcare for Ghanaians.
