What advice could you offer? – Haruna Iddrisu fires back at Adutwum over CSSPS remarks

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has rejected former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum’s offer to advise him on managing Ghana’s education sector, questioning what guidance his predecessor could provide.

Dr. Adutwum had said he was available to share his experience with Mr. Iddrisu whenever he needed guidance.

But Mr. Iddrisu said the Mahama administration inherited a “despondent educational system”, citing infrastructure deficits, feeding challenges under Free SHS and the double-track system.

“So, when he says come to me for advice, what advice? Advice that you left a despondent educational system is what President Mahama inherited,” he said in an interview with TV3 on Friday, September 11.

He also questioned whether Dr Adutwum could advise the government on ending the double-track system.

“Am I going to go to Minister Adutwum to seek for advice to end double track? When he invented double track and knows the consequences of double track on the quality of education? I should go for advice on that? Interesting times,” he said.

Mr. Iddrisu’s comments come amid renewed debate over challenges in the education sector following the 2026 BECE school placement exercise.

About 55,000 qualified BECE candidates were initially not automatically placed under the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS), prompting concerns from parents and candidates.

The Education Ministry explained that the issue was largely due to a mismatch between candidates’ choices and available vacancies, rather than a shortage of places.
