The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced the launch of the 2026/27 Colts Football Season, a day after President John Dramani Mahama urged the Association and club administrators to revive the competition as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots football development.
The GFA President, Kurt E. S. Okraku in a Facebook post on Thursday, September 10, 2026, announced that the launch will take place on Tuesday, September 15, at the E.T. Mensah Hall of the Ghana Senior Correctional Enterprise (GSCE) in Prampram at 3:00 p.m.
The announcement comes shortly after President Mahama called for urgent measures to improve the standard of domestic football and restore the Colts League.
President Mahama made the call when officials of Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC paid a courtesy call on him.
He expressed concern about the declining quality of the domestic league and the increasing number of promising Ghanaian players leaving the country at an early age in search of opportunities abroad.
According to the President, the early departure of young talents is depriving the domestic league of some of its best players and limiting their opportunity to gain the experience needed before making the move to foreign leagues.
“We must find a way to keep our talented players longer, give them opportunities in the national team, allow them to gain international experience, and then let them move abroad after they have matured,” President Mahama said.
He stressed the need for stronger structures to identify, nurture and develop young footballers, providing them with a clear pathway from grassroots football through the domestic league and eventually to the international stage.
President Mahama specifically called for the revival of the Colts League, describing it as an important component of efforts to strengthen grassroots football and establish a sustainable pipeline for identifying and developing young talent.
He urged the GFA and club administrators to work together to restore the competitiveness and attractiveness of Ghana’s domestic football while creating better opportunities for young players to develop their careers locally.
The GFA’s announcement of the launch of the 2026/27 Colts Football Season therefore signals a move towards responding to the President’s call for renewed attention to grassroots football development.
