Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has warned lawmakers that their future political ambitions could be threatened if they fail to uphold strong ethical standards while serving the public.
The Speaker made the remarks during the unveiling of the National Integrity Awards Scheme at the D.F. Annan Auditorium in Parliament on Monday, July 27, where he emphasised that credibility remains a key factor in maintaining the confidence of voters.
According to Mr. Bagbin, Members of Parliament preparing to contest future elections must demonstrate integrity in their actions, decisions and conduct.
“MPs who want to contest again, you better imbibe integrity. If not, before you go, the Speaker has finished you in your constituency,” he cautioned.
He also called for strict fairness in the implementation of the National Integrity Awards Scheme, warning against using integrity as a basis for unfair judgement or selective treatment.
“This scheme must be administered with fairness, great care, responsibility and due regard to the law. Integrity must never become an excuse for arbitrariness. Accountability must be anchored in truth, justice, equity and due process,” he stated.
The Speaker said institutions and individuals entrusted with promoting accountability must operate within accepted legal and ethical boundaries to ensure public trust is maintained.
The National Integrity Awards Scheme is designed to recognise and encourage individuals and organisations that demonstrate commitment to transparency, responsible leadership and ethical behaviour in Ghana.
