The Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the nature of relief items being distributed by the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to victims affected by the recent floods in parts of Accra.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Tuesday, July 7, the Effutu Member of Parliament questioned whether the supplies being provided were sufficient to meet the needs of residents whose homes and livelihoods were devastated by the flooding.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin claimed that some flood victims in communities including Nima and Accra New Town had received relief items such as baked beans and instant noodles despite reports that funds had been allocated to support flood recovery efforts.
According to him, the magnitude of the destruction requires a more comprehensive intervention, as many affected families have lost their homes, personal belongings and sources of income.
The Minority Leader argued that government support should go beyond the provision of emergency food supplies and include essential household staples such as rice, maize and cooking oil, as well as financial assistance and livelihood support to help victims rebuild their lives and businesses.
He also called for greater transparency in the procurement and distribution of relief items and urged the relevant authorities to broaden the scope of assistance being offered to displaced residents.
