Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, thanks to a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi in Toronto.

The Black Stars endured a difficult opening half, with goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi producing key saves to deny Panama and keep the score level. Ghana struggled to create chances and failed to register a shot on target before the break.

Ati-Zigi’s night ended prematurely after he sustained an injury late in the first half, forcing Benjamin Asare into action for the second period.

Coach Carlos Queiroz responded with attacking changes after halftime, introducing Fatawu Issahaku and Thomas Asante as Ghana looked to take control. The Black Stars gradually improved and came close to breaking the deadlock, but Jordan Ayew squandered a promising opportunity.

With the match appearing destined for a draw, Yirenkyi emerged as the hero deep into stoppage time, bundling home the winner in the 95th minute to secure all three points for Ghana.

Panama pushed for a late equaliser, but Ghana’s defence held firm to seal a winning start to their Group L campaign.

The result gives the Black Stars an early advantage in the group and marks a successful World Cup debut for Queiroz as Ghana manager.
