Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has received the outgoing Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Ghana, Her Excellency Mariana Gonçalves Madeira, and commended her for her contributions toward strengthening relations between the two countries.
During a farewell meeting, the Vice President, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, the Government and people of Ghana, expressed appreciation to Ambassador Madeira for her service and efforts in deepening Ghana-Brazil cooperation during her tenure.
Ambassador Madeira reflected on the progress Ghana has made and praised the efforts of President Mahama’s administration to strengthen the country’s economy.
She described Ghana as a key partner for Brazil and expressed confidence in the potential for both nations to expand their collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in sectors including agriculture and agribusiness, energy, security and defence, trade, and social development.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted opportunities for increased collaboration in the energy sector, particularly through partnerships involving Brazil’s state-owned oil company, Petrobras, as Ghana seeks to expand its energy capacity and attract strategic investments.
She noted that the relationship between Ghana and Brazil goes beyond modern diplomatic ties, with deep historical and cultural connections shaped by the movement of people across the Atlantic.
The Vice President also acknowledged Brazil’s support for Ghana on international initiatives, including efforts related to the United Nations resolution on the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, as well as cooperation under the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and programmes focused on women and social development.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang commended Ambassador Madeira for broadening the scope of diplomatic engagement during her tenure through collaborations with institutions including the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Ga Traditional Council, and initiatives aimed at promoting food security and social welfare.
She wished the outgoing ambassador well in her future diplomatic endeavours and expressed Ghana’s commitment to working with her successor to maintain the momentum in Ghana-Brazil relations.
The meeting, she said, reaffirmed the shared commitment of both countries to building partnerships that deliver tangible benefits to their citizens.
