NPP to decide position on major constitutional reforms today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is expected to take a major decision today, Thursday, September 10, 2026, on proposed amendments to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution as its National Executive Committee (NEC) meets to consider and approve the party’s position paper on the reforms.

The meeting could mark a significant moment in the ongoing constitutional review process, as the party prepares to state clearly which proposals it supports, opposes or wants amended.

The NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee has completed its assessment of the Constitution Review Committee (CRC) report and the government’s response to the proposed reforms.

The committee has subsequently prepared a position paper outlining the party’s views on the recommendations. The document has been submitted to NPP flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the NEC for consideration and adoption.

Among the major reforms before the party is a proposal to extend the term of office for the President and Parliament from four years to five years.

Other proposals include the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), an increase in the number of Members of Parliament from 275 to 300, and a reduction in the minimum age for presidential candidates from 40 to 35.

Government has also expressed support for several other proposed amendments.

These include allowing Ghanaians with dual citizenship to contest parliamentary elections, abolishing the death penalty and granting all members in good standing of political parties equal voting rights in the selection of parliamentary and presidential candidates.

The proposals, if adopted, could significantly reshape Ghana’s electoral and political system, particularly in relation to local governance, parliamentary representation, presidential eligibility and internal political party elections.

The NPP’s position is therefore being closely watched, especially because the party participated in the national constitutional review process and submitted its own recommendations to the CRC.

In a statement dated August 28, the NPP said its Constitutional and Legal Affairs Policy Committee had undertaken a “detailed review” of both the CRC report and the government’s response.

The party also reaffirmed its commitment to a constitutional review process that is transparent, inclusive and orderly.

It said the process must “protect Ghana’s democracy, strengthen constitutional institutions and promote political stability and national development.”

Following the NEC meeting, the NPP is expected to communicate its official position to the public.

The party could either endorse the recommendations in their current form, reject specific proposals or call for modifications to particular provisions.

The outcome is expected to add an important political dimension to the wider national discussion on constitutional reform, as stakeholders continue to debate the proposed changes and their possible impact on Ghana’s democratic governance.

With proposals ranging from the length of presidential terms to the election of MMDCEs and the eligibility of presidential candidates, the NPP’s decision could help shape the next phase of Ghana’s constitutional reform debate.
