The Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has responded to comments made by former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, regarding the Afari Military Hospital project, insisting that claims suggesting no meaningful work was done on the facility are inaccurate.
In a statement addressing public discussions on the project, Mr. Ahiagbah said he had received numerous messages urging him to react to Mr. Agyapong’s assertions, which suggested that the previous administration made little to no progress on the hospital.
He described some of the commentary circulating around the issue as politically motivated.
Using Mr. Agyapong’s popular phrase “Let Ken be Ken,” the NPP Communications Director acknowledged the former MP’s reputation for blunt and outspoken commentary, but added that in this instance, his remarks did not reflect the full facts surrounding the project’s status.
Mr. Ahiagbah argued that the Afari Military Hospital was already about 40 percent complete when the Akufo-Addo–Bawumia administration took office in 2017, and said the project had reached approximately 98 percent completion by January 2025.
He detailed reported progress across various components of the facility, including civil works at 97.5 percent completion as of September 2024, architectural works at 87 percent, roads at 80 percent, and landscaping at 77 percent.
According to him, only about 2 percent of the work remained, estimated at roughly $500,000, to fully complete and operationalise the facility.
Mr. Ahiagbah maintained that the figures demonstrate significant progress made under the previous administration, adding that attempts to downplay those gains were misleading.
He further urged political actors and commentators to rely on verified facts when discussing national projects, stressing that accurate information is necessary for constructive public discourse.
