The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has paid GH¢382.85 million in claims to healthcare service providers across Ghana.

The payment was made in September under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). It covers services provided to NHIS members by credentialed healthcare facilities across the country.

The latest payment brings the NHIA’s total claims payments for the year to GH¢2.115 billion.

The Authority said the latest disbursement demonstrates its “resolve to ensure healthcare providers receive prompt reimbursement and can continue delivering uninterrupted, quality healthcare services to members.”

Public healthcare facilities received the largest share of the September payment.

They received GH¢197.32 million, representing 51.54 per cent of the total claims paid.

Private healthcare facilities received GH¢128.95 million. This accounted for 33.68 per cent of the payment.

Mission healthcare facilities received GH¢56.58 million, representing 14.78 per cent.

NHIA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe said the Authority remains committed to paying healthcare providers promptly. He said the NHIA is focused on “promptly paying claims to credentialed healthcare providers.”

Dr. Bampoe also highlighted the importance of timely reimbursement to the healthcare sector.

He said “timely reimbursement remains crucial to maintaining healthcare providers’ and NHIS members’ confidence while supporting seamless service delivery across the country.”

The NHIA CEO said improving access to healthcare remains a major priority for the Authority.

According to Dr. Bampoe, “the NHIA’s priority is to ensure that every NHIS member can access healthcare services without facing financial barriers at the point of care.”

He said prompt claims payments should also help prevent healthcare facilities from charging NHIS members for services already covered by the Scheme.

“Prompt claims payment remains central to the Authority’s operational reforms, and the objective is to prevent co-payment at the point of care,” he stated.

The NHIA has also increased service tariffs for healthcare providers. The Authority increased the tariffs by 50 per cent in August.

Dr. Bampoe said the increase was introduced to support healthcare providers and maintain quality service delivery.

He explained that the adjustment was intended “to cushion service providers and strengthen the Authority’s efforts to eliminate financial obstacles to healthcare access for all NHIS members.”

The NHIA said timely claims payments are important to the smooth delivery of healthcare services.

The Authority expects the latest disbursement to provide further financial support to public, private and mission facilities.

The payment also forms part of the NHIA’s wider efforts to improve healthcare access and reduce financial barriers for NHIS members.

With total claims payments now reaching GH¢2.115 billion for the year, the NHIA says it remains focused on ensuring healthcare providers receive timely reimbursement.

The Authority also expects the improved payment process to strengthen confidence in the NHIS and help members access covered healthcare services without unnecessary financial pressure.
