Two people have died and 14 others, including a police officer, have sustained gunshot wounds following disturbances at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region.
The incident occurred on Saturday, October 3, 2026, during celebrations marking the community’s Yam Festival.
According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the Wenchi Divisional Police have since restored calm in the area, with intensified patrols ongoing.
A statement issued by the Police Public Affairs Unit in Sunyani said the disturbances occurred at about 5:30 p.m. after the Yam Festival programme had ended.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace when a gunshot was heard, triggering the disturbances.
The Police said two people died in the incident, while 13 others, including a police officer, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving treatment.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.
The Bono Regional Police Command said the situation at Nchiraa remains calm and assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and arrest persons involved in the disturbances.
The Police have also urged the public to remain calm as investigations into the incident continue.
