Volta Regional Minister James Gunu, has emphasised the importance of a healthy and productive population to the success of President John Dramani Mahama’s 24-Hour Economy programme.

Speaking at the opening of the 24th Annual General and Scientific Conference of the Medical Superintendents’ Group (MSG) in Ho, Mr Gunu said quality healthcare was central to sustaining the government’s economic agenda.

The conference was held under the theme: “Leadership and Innovation in Free Primary Healthcare Towards Achieving Universal Health Coverage in Ghana.”

According to the Regional Minister, the 24-Hour Economy could only thrive if Ghanaians remained healthy and productive.

He said the government’s efforts to expand access to primary healthcare were therefore critical to the broader objective of transforming the economy.

“In the Volta Region, we are making deliberate progress in expanding access to primary healthcare,” Mr Gunu said.

He disclosed that 36 Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds had been constructed in the region, with additional facilities at various stages of completion.

The projects, he said, formed part of efforts to address the infrastructure deficit that had affected access to healthcare in the region.

Mr Gunu also said the Regional Coordinating Council was supporting efforts to provide health facilities with reliable water supply while advancing the implementation of Free Primary Healthcare.

He linked these interventions to Ghana’s broader goal of achieving Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goal 3, which seeks to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all.

The Regional Minister called for stronger collaboration between government and health professionals to improve healthcare delivery and build a healthier Volta Region.

He stressed that a healthy population was essential to economic growth and productivity.

“A healthy population is the engine of a thriving economy,” Mr Gunu said
