The Chief Executive Officer(CEO) of the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF), Mrs Justina Nelson, has emphasised the need for increased investment, data sharing and regional cooperation to unlock greater value from Africa’s mineral resources.
Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference in Accra, Mrs Nelson highlighted the importance of local mineral processing, effective policy frameworks and stronger regional partnerships in promoting economic growth and sustainable development.
She noted that greater value could be derived from the continent’s mineral wealth when countries moved beyond the extraction of raw materials and strengthened their capacity to process minerals locally.
Mrs Nelson’s remarks highlighted the role of local processing in creating employment opportunities, expanding industrial activity and ensuring that mineral-producing countries benefit more substantially from their natural resources.
She also stressed the importance of effective policies in creating an environment that encourages investment and supports the sustainable development of the mining sector.
According to the key themes of her address, improved access to reliable data and information sharing among stakeholders could help strengthen decision-making and support more effective management of mineral resources.
The MIIF Chief Executive further highlighted regional cooperation as an important factor in maximising the benefits of Africa’s mineral wealth.
Stronger partnerships among African countries, she indicated, could support collaboration, improve investment opportunities and help develop value chains that extend beyond national borders.
Her contribution at the Mining in Motion Conference adds to discussions on how African countries can use their mineral resources to drive industrialisation, create jobs and promote sustainable economic development.
