The Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has appealed to the government and the Ministry of Education to urgently complete the Weija-Gbawe STEM School, initiated under the administration of former President Nana Akufo-Addo.

According to the MP, completing the facility has become increasingly urgent following the challenges thousands of students have faced securing placement in Senior High Schools this year.

He said the project was originally conceived to provide additional space for students and ease pressure on existing educational facilities in the constituency.

“The school was built to at least accommodate our school children and to ease the pressure on the existing schools.”

Hon. Ahmed Shaib said the current situation in the placement process highlights the need for the facility to be completed.

“This year, we have seen thousands of students stranded because of the pressure on the existing schools. This is exactly why we need to complete this facility.”

The MP disclosed that the STEM school is approximately 70 percent complete, with about 30 percent of the work remaining.

“The school is about 70 percent completed. We are only talking about the remaining 30 percent, and I believe this can be completed if there is the commitment.”

He urged the government and the Ministry of Education to set aside political differences and prioritise the completion of the project in the interest of students.

“Let us put the usual politics aside and look at the interest of the children. Education is about the future of our children, so we should all work together to ensure that this school is completed.”

Mr. Ahmed Shaib made the appeal during a ceremony organised to distribute educational materials to students from the constituency who had secured admission to various Senior High Schools.

The initiative, he said, was intended to support the students as they transition from basic education to second-cycle education.

While stressing the importance of providing students with educational materials, the MP said such support must be accompanied by investments in educational infrastructure.

“We can continue to support our children with educational materials but we must also provide the infrastructure they need.

Completing this STEM school will go a long way towards addressing the challenges we are facing.”

He called on the relevant authorities to make the completion of the facility a priority, saying it would help expand access to secondary education and reduce pressure on existing schools in the constituency and beyond.
