About 400 households involving more than 4,200 people have been affected by flooding in parts of the Hohoe municipality in the Volta Region following the overflow of the River Dayi.

The Hohoe Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Prosper Kumi, said the River Dayi had overflowed its banks, resulting in the flooding of several communities and homes.

According to him, the number of affected households and individuals could increase as floodwaters move downstream and reach other communities.

Mr Kumi described the situation as devastating, noting that several residents had lost their homes and properties.

He, however, said no lives had been lost, describing the situation as a major relief amid the disaster.

He commended the Hohoe Municipal Assembly, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), security services, the area’s Member of Parliament and the Volta Regional Minister for their support in managing the situation.

The MCE said temporary holding areas had been secured for displaced residents, with support from the Ghana Education Service (GES), which provided classrooms to accommodate some of the affected persons.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has also provided relief materials, including mosquito nets and beds, for the victims.

Mr Kumi appealed for additional national support, particularly for residents who had lost their livelihoods as a result of the floods.

He cited the case of a resident whose entire rice and beans business was submerged, leaving the person with nothing to salvage.

“This is the time they need clean water, this is the time they need beds, shelter and other support.

In fact, yesterday I went to visit an affected home and all the food items and other provisions they sell have all been submerged and they must be supported,” he stressed.

He called on individuals, corporate organisations and well-meaning Ghanaians to support the affected communities with essential items, including clean water, beds, shelter and other relief supplies.

The MCE also appealed for assistance for small businesses that had suffered losses in the floods, stressing the importance of community solidarity in supporting affected residents.

“This is where the community feeling and the ‘we’ life is key as Ghanaians to show our love to the affected victims,” he said.

Mr Kumi further appealed for machinery to dredge sections of the River Dayi and other affected areas as part of measures to reduce the risk of future flooding.

“We would appeal for some machineries to help dredge sections of the River Dayi and other affected areas to reduce future flooding,” he said.

On the possibility of disease outbreaks following the flooding, Mr Kumi said the Municipal Assembly was engaging health officials to prepare for potential public health threats.

He also expressed appreciation to residents and families who had opened their homes to accommodate people displaced by the floods.
