Ghanaians are keeping more money in their mobile money wallets than ever before, with balances hitting a record GH¢40 billion in June 2026, underscoring the rapid transformation of the country’s digital payments landscape and the increasing reliance on mobile financial services.
Latest payment systems data released by the Bank of Ghana shows that mobile money float balances rose from GH¢28.9 billion in June 2025 to GH¢40 billion in June 2026—a year-on-year increase of more than 38%.Ghanaian culture insights
The sharp rise suggests mobile wallets are evolving beyond their traditional role as payment and transfer platforms, increasingly serving as convenient stores of value for households, informal businesses and small enterprises.
The trend reflects growing consumer confidence in digital financial services at a time when cashless transactions continue to gain traction across the economy.
The higher balances also point to changing financial behaviour, with more Ghanaians choosing to retain funds digitally for day-to-day purchases, business operations and emergency spending rather than withdrawing cash immediately.
The broader mobile money ecosystem also continued to expand. Registered mobile money accounts increased to 84.6 million in June 2026 from 76.4 million a year earlier, while active accounts rose to 26.4 million, signalling sustained growth in the number of individuals regularly using digital financial services.
Transaction activity remained robust, reinforcing mobile money’s central role in Ghana’s retail economy.
During June alone, platforms processed 954 million transactions with a combined value of GH¢492.9 billion, highlighting the increasing use of mobile wallets for merchant payments, salary disbursements, bill settlements, remittances and person-to-person transfers.
The industry’s distribution network also strengthened, improving financial access across the country. Registered mobile money agents exceeded the one-million mark for the first time, reaching 1.016 million, while active agents climbed to 546,000.
The expanded network is expected to further deepen financial inclusion by making digital financial services more accessible in both urban centres and underserved rural communities.
Interoperability across mobile money platforms also continued to gain momentum.
Users conducted 33 million cross-network transactions worth GH¢6.2 billion during the month, reflecting the growing convenience of transferring funds seamlessly between different mobile money providers and supporting greater efficiency within Ghana’s digital payments ecosystem.Ghanaian culture insights
The latest figures reinforce mobile money’s position as one of Ghana’s most significant financial infrastructure developments.
Beyond facilitating payments, the platform is increasingly becoming an essential channel for savings, commerce and financial inclusion.
As wallet balances, transaction values and active users continue to rise, the sector is expected to play an even greater role in supporting economic activity, expanding access to formal financial services and accelerating Ghana’s transition towards a digitally driven economy.
