The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah Kofi-Buah, has announced that Cabinet has directed the immediate revocation of Executive Instrument (E.I.) 144, as amended by E.I. 234, effectively restoring the Achimota Forest in the Greater Accra Region to its original status as a Forest Reserve.
The decision means the Achimota Forest will continue to serve as an ecological safety zone for Accra and surrounding communities, protecting its environmental importance and biodiversity.
The Minister made the announcement while speaking at the Government Accountability series in Accra on Wednesday.
According to the Minister, the move forms part of government’s commitment to preserving Ghana’s natural resources and safeguarding critical green spaces from activities that could threaten their ecological value.
The revocation of the Executive Instruments reverses previous measures that altered the legal status of portions of the Achimota Forest and reaffirms its protection as a designated forest reserve.
The Achimota Forest, has long been recognised as a key environmental asset, providing ecological benefits including climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and improved air quality for residents in the capital and its environs.
The Minister said further details on the implementation of Cabinet’s directive and the legal processes surrounding the revocation will be communicated in due course.
