Director of Operations for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Divine Nkrumah has criticized Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) and its chairperson, Jean Mensa, accusing her of a lack of diligence and transparency in the lead-up to the 2024 general election.
Speaking on RadioXYZ with Agya Wusu, Nkrumah expressed frustration over what he described as the EC’s dismissive attitude towards political party’s request for summary statistics during Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting where EC presented Political Parties with certified voter register.
According to Nkruma, EC’s refusal to provide critical summary statistics shows that EC has hidden agenda that every Ghanaian must be worried about.
“Jean Mensa’s behavior is just like witchcraft,” referring to what he sees as her opaque and rigid management of the electoral process. “Anyone who wants to fight this level of obstruction should be prepared because the way the EC is handling things has the potential to destabilize Ghana.”
Nkrumah said IPAC representatives were held for nearly eight hours, only to be told that the EC was not legally obligated to provide the requested summary statistics. This, he argued, suggests the EC is not accountable to the political parties or the Ghanaian people.
“If the EC does not respect the political parties, they should at least respect Ghanaians whose names are in the register. Provide the necessary details so everyone can trust that the register is sound for a fair election,” Nkrumah added.
