The Ghana Medical Trust Fund (GMTF) has exceeded expectations in its first year of operation and is emerging as a key intervention for expanding access to specialised healthcare in Ghana, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has said.

According to the Minister, the Fund’s performance demonstrates that strategic collaboration between government, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders can help address some of the country’s most pressing healthcare challenges.

Mr Akandoh made the assessment at a ceremony marking the first anniversary of the GMTF, held under the theme “One Year On – An Evening of Reflection.”

The event brought together specialist doctors, medical directors, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to review the Fund’s achievements and consider the way forward.

“Within just one year, the Fund has exceeded expectations,” the Minister said, commending the management of the GMTF, specialist doctors, medical directors and other healthcare professionals for their commitment to the Fund’s mandate.

He said the progress made by the GMTF represented an important step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC), particularly by helping to remove financial barriers that prevent many Ghanaians from accessing specialised medical treatment.

Mr Akandoh said the GMTF was becoming an important vehicle through which government could strengthen its response to complex and chronic health conditions while improving access to specialised care.

He said the Fund’s first-year achievements demonstrated the value of bringing together key actors within the health sector to develop practical and sustainable solutions to healthcare challenges.

The Minister, however, urged medical professionals and other stakeholders to uphold honesty, transparency and accountability in their dealings with government.

He said such principles were necessary to ensure that resources and interventions provided through the GMTF were used effectively and achieved their intended impact.

Mr Akandoh also encouraged medical practitioners to maintain close collaboration with government and the GMTF to improve health outcomes and ensure that the Fund’s interventions translated into tangible benefits for Ghanaians.

The Health Minister further challenged the management of the GMTF to intensify public education and increase the Fund’s visibility across the country.

He said the availability of specialised healthcare interventions alone was not enough, stressing that citizens needed clear information about the support provided by the Fund, eligibility requirements and how to access its services.

According to him, greater public awareness would enable more people in need of specialised care to benefit from the Fund.Mr Akandoh also disclosed that government was strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) as part of broader efforts to make healthcare more accessible, responsive and sustainable.

He said the NHIS, together with complementary initiatives such as the GMTF, formed part of government’s wider strategy to remove financial barriers to quality healthcare and advance Ghana’s Universal Health Coverage agenda.

The Minister urged stakeholders in the health sector to sustain the collaboration, professionalism and commitment that had characterised the GMTF’s first year.

He said the ultimate measure of the Fund’s success would be its ability to save lives, improve health outcomes and ensure that no Ghanaian was denied specialised healthcare because of financial constraints.
