Unionist rejects political claims in Sedina Tamakloe Attionu ‘s acquittal, says court relied on evidence

The Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has dismissed claims that the Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Officer, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu , was politically influenced.

The Court of Appeal recently overturned the 2024 High Court conviction and 10-year prison sentence handed to Ms. Tamakloe, who served as MASLOC CEO from 2013 to 2017, after ruling that the prosecution failed to prove the charges against her beyond reasonable doubt.

Speaking on Ahotor FM, Mr. Koomson said his assessment of the judgment showed that the appellate court’s decision was based on the evidence before it and not political considerations.

He explained that after reviewing the judgment, he concluded that the prosecution was unable to establish its case to the required legal standard, arguing that the accused had been wrongly placed in a position where she was expected to prove her innocence.

“I strongly disagree with the argument that the ruling was politically motivated.

I studied the judgment and realised the judges based their decision on the facts before them,” he said.

Mr. Koomson further argued that suggestions of political interference were unfounded, noting that the panel of judges who heard the appeal included individuals appointed at different times and not solely by one political administration.

The labour leader also criticised what he described as a long history of political propaganda in Ghana, alleging that successive political actors have used accusations and narratives to discredit opponents.

He claimed that some past decisions involving political parties and public officials had contributed to perceptions of judicial bias, citing previous high-profile legal matters as examples.

Mr. Koomson also accused the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) of engaging in misinformation against the current government’s policies, including issues surrounding cocoa pricing, and called on the National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration to strengthen its grassroots communication structures.

He said a stronger grassroots presence would enable the government and its supporters to better explain policies and respond effectively to what he described as misleading claims.

The Court of Appeal’s decision to acquit and discharge Sedinam Attionu Tamakloe has continued to generate public discussion, with various stakeholders offering differing views on the implications of the ruling.
