In a recent meeting convened to address concerns surrounding the voter registration process in Okaikwei North and Central Constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, the main opposition National Democratic Congress(NDC) has voiced its staunch opposition to what they termed “obnoxious directives” related to the registration exercise.
According to the NDC, Okaikwei Central and Okwaikwei North, have been embroiled in controversy over alleged security issues and directives allowing the busing of individuals for registration purposes.
The Constituency Chairman of Okaikoi North , speaking at a press conference said that Chief Superintendent Anita Ablokwa, the divisional commander, presented a directive purportedly originating from higher authorities, suggesting that there is no legal impediment against the busing of individuals for registration.
However, NDC contested this assertion, citing Regulation 22 of CI 127, which mandates a minimum one-year residency in a Constituency for voter registration or transfer.
Expressing their firm stance against the directive, members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Okaikwei North and Okaikwei Central declared their intention to resist any attempts to bus individuals to registration centers.
The NDC emphasizing their commitment to upholding the law, warned against the unlawful transfer of voters from other constituencies, particularly in light of perceived attempts by opponents to influence the electoral outcome.
The NDC cautioned against deception and urged compliance with electoral regulations.
The NDC emphasized that the determination of the Constituency’s representation should rest solely with its residents, rejecting any external interference.
Furthermore, NDC issued a strong advisory to parents, urging them to discourage their children from participating in any busing schemes aimed at influencing the voter registration process.
Reiterating their adherence to electoral laws, the NDC called for a reevaluation of the directive in alignment with legal provisions.
The resolute stance taken by NDC in Okaikwei North Constituency underscores the contentious nature of the voter registration process and the commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the electoral system.
